A plea and guiding map for humanity, expressed in music, receives its world premiere when the Upper Canada Choristers and their accomplished Latin ensemble Cantemos premiere Common Ground, a six-movement cycle written for them by their music director, Laurie Evan Fraser. The new work is dedicated to the insightful and widely followed U.S. historian Heather Cox Richardson, who advocates for “art as joyful resistance”, in appreciation “for helping to keep us sane and hopeful in trying times.” The music features settings of poetry in English by Jacqui Atkin and in Spanish by Jacinto Salcedo. The choir’s pianist Hye Won (Cecilia) Lee, and guest oboist Karen Ages also take part.

Rounding out the concert will be songs on the theme of empathy and understanding by Broadway composers Richard Rodgers, Lerner and Lowe, and others. Cantemos will perform Venezuela’s energetic unofficial national anthem, Alma llanera (Soul of the Plains).

Free admission for children/youths 16 & under when accompanied by an adult.

The performance also streams online via https://www.uppercanadachoristers.org and https://bit.ly/4l22UT0. There is no charge, but donations are most welcome.
