The Vancouver Folk Music Festival (VFMF)—which celebrates its 50th anniversary next year—occupies a firmly established place in Vancouver’s music scene. The three-day event offers a deep sense of community, bringing folk-music enthusiasts together in the beautifully situated Jericho Beach Park. This year’s Indian Summer Festival demonstrates a beautiful truth: inspiration is all around. In the two concerts I attended, artists reinterpreted words from the songs they heard growing up, sampled melodies from film soundtracks, and translated the natural bioelectric signals of plants into audible sound. These concerts (seen July 11 & 13) offered a look into artists’ connections with their cultures, friends and family, and the natural world. In its mission statement, Indian Summer aims to “address a gap in Vancouver’s cultural landscape and to break stereotypical perceptions of South Asian art as ossified, traditional, and nostalgic”. The Calgary Philharmonic is pleased to announce Canadian conductor Ilan Kumaranayake Mendel will take to the podium as the Orchestra’s next Resident Conductor, beginning in the 2026/2027 Season. Mendel was selected as Resident Conductor of the Calgary Phil following a rigorous audition and interview process with applicants from across Canada. The Resident Conductor position, an endowed chair generously supported by Mary Rozsa de Coquet, provides an opportunity for early-career conductors to further develop their conducting and leadership skills. TORONTO, ON — Toronto-based trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Mike Herriott will take his most ambitious work to the stage this fall, presenting the world-premiere live performances of the Tales of Tricksters and Vagabonds Suite on a four-city tour across Canada.
