Paradisum is an unusual theatrical experience—a dark and brooding new circus show grounded in contemporary dance, with enough high-flying acts of derring-do to arouse the audience to frequent applause. That at least was the case in Vancouver when Hungary’s Recirquel premiered Bence Vági’s Paradisum in North America as part of the DanceHouse season, presented in partnership with the Cultch. Key to this brooding and also beautiful work is the mysteriously threatening setting—mountains and towers rise imposingly, then collapse and reform, or melt into thin air and reappear in new configurations. Once I became aware of the simplicity of the stagecraft,…

Dec. 18 marked the opening night of Chor Leoni’s annual Christmas concert. Lit with bright red, blue and magenta hues, the inside of St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church continues to be a magical venue. After attending last year, I was drawn to return, hoping to surround myself with holiday joy.  The lights dimmed so that only blue lighting remained as the members of the choir emerged carrying lit candles. The opening song, “Wonder Nouvelet” was the first of five world premieres promised for the night. Chor Leoni’s guest instrumentalists quickly established themselves as the bright shining stars of the event. Almost…

At this time of the year, it’s expected that at least one choir and orchestra will perform Handel’s Messiah in most Canadian cities. The oratorio composed in 1741 has become so synonymous with the season that, for some, it is a yearly tradition to attend a performance. On Dec. 13, I sat among many such enthusiasts to witness my first live Messiah, presented by Early Music Vancouver. The crowd was buzzing with excitement as we took our seats. A French double-manual harpsichord stood centre stage surrounded by a semicircle of chairs for the players. After a brief introduction, land acknowledgement…

In Vancouver on Nov. 29, sopranos Jaclyn Grossman and Miriam Khalil will present Salam-Shalom: Echoes of Home. This program of Arabic and Jewish music explores how these two distinct cultures are intertwined through shared histories, human experiences, and sounds. They will be accompanied by pianist Gordon Gerrard, artistic director of City Opera Vancouver. Both performers emphasize their eagerness to embrace this learning opportunity. “Right out of the gate, we both [agreed] let’s not do ‘I’m doing my thing, and you’re doing your thing,’” says Grossman. “Let’s share in each other’s music and cultures in this concert.” A Jewish singer and…
