Composer, pedagogue, and Pianist Carl Czerny was known primarily for his immense contributions to the intermediate ranges of piano music. A prodigy, Czerny studied with Beethoven from the age of ten when the young Czerny impressed the old master with renditions of Pathétique and Adelaide. In his own teaching career, Czerny would have as pupil the little-known pianist Franz Liszt who later dedicated his Études d’exécution transcendente. Although his compositions have been considered dry and formulaic by icons as Robert Schumann, his pedagogy is considered the foundation upon which modern piano technique is based. Cartel 2016: New Music Presenters Conference (Montreal, June 1–5)

Instigated two years ago under the name Cartel Montreal, this initiative enabled new music presenters both in North America and Europe to meet for a four-day conference, which took place during the alternative Suoni per il Popolo Festival held annually in June. Spearheaded by le Vivier, a Montreal-based association of over 30 music production companies and related partners with vested interests in all forms of contemporary music and their outreach in the community, this inaugural meeting attracted close to 50 participants, half of which were Vivier members.
