This unique documentary follows three Deaf musicians from Venezuela as they take on the challenge of staging Beethoven’s Fidelio in sign language under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel. The film explores their family isolation, social discrimination, and shows how music becomes their refuge and hope. The screening will be followed by a discussion with María Valverde, Gustavo Dudamel, and Rafael Payare, Music Director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
María is an internationally recognized Spanish actress and director. Discovered at only sixteen in La flaqueza del bolchevique (2003), she won the Goya Award for Best New Actress, one of Spain’s highest cinematic honors. Since then, she has built an international career, working with renowned directors such as Ridley Scott (Melissa P., Exodus: Gods and Kings) and exploring diverse cinematic horizons. With Songs of the Hands, she makes her directorial debut, offering a sensitive and artistic perspective on the intersection of music, sign language, and social inclusion. Her presence in Montreal starting Friday afternoon offers a rare opportunity for an interview about this inspiring project.
