Gold medalist of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition, and hailed as “enthralling” in the Globe and Mail, Angela Cheng is one of Canada’s national musical treasures. Her solo repertoire for this recital includes Beethoven’s next-to-last piano sonata (an intensely beautiful piece that he composed in 1821), and a stormy ballade by Chopin (1835-36). She and husband Alvin Chow perform three French works for piano four-hands: Claude Debussy’s elegant Petite Suite (1886-89), which dates from his Romantic, pre-impressionist period; the happy-go-lucky frolic of Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche (1937); and Maurice Ravel’s La Valse (The Waltz, 1919-20), an increasingly troubled vision of Europe’s future after the catastrophe of the First World War.
