Artists working in Post-Napoleonic Europe had every reason to doubt the values of elegant intellectualism that had, in the eighteenth century, been canonized as humanity’s salvation. In a world recovering from war, artists turned inward, seeking the emotional, the irrational, the transcendentally human qualities that would overturn an embattled world.
Hector Berlioz monomaniacally pursued a personal and an artistic world of his own devising. Gifted with a preternatural gift for combining musical ideas and cursed with a temperament unsuited to any sort of healthy relationship, his musical output crackles with fevered energy. Mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne brings a warm, rich tone and profound understanding of the works of Berlioz to her spell-binding interpretation of Les nuits d’été.
Franz Schubert’s life was cut short by an unspecified illness. His Ninth Symphony ‘The Great’ was to remain unperformed during his tragically shortened life, but it has become a cornerstone of the orchestral repertoire and an epitaph to the unrealized potential of the young master.
