From modest beginnings as a small string orchestra in 1982, the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy (OYOA) has grown under the tutelage of founder and Music Director John Gomez to include over 380 musicians in various string, wind, and percussion ensembles, and two symphonic orchestras. The Ottawa Youth Orchestra (OYO) is the highest level group at the academy and includes many of Ottawa's finest young musicians. The OYOA provides unique, high level orchestral music instruction and performance opportunities throughout the academic year, as well as in our summer camp program. OYOA students regularly perform in the Kiwanis Music Festival and MusicFest, as part of their regular ensembles and in smaller ensembles, as well as individually. Our students and ensembles have represented the National Capital Region provincially and nationally. Our conductors and coaches are themselves all participants in the musical life of our city, and many are also regular performers at the National Arts Centre. In addition to a well-supported season of concerts featuring our two orchestras, the OYOA sponsors two free family concerts each year, featuring all OYOA ensembles. The general public is welcome to attend these concerts and hear the amazing musical talent at OYOA, and for potential students to discover the enjoyment of the challenges and achievements arising from OYOA membership.
