A REVERIE: on Victor Herbert’s wonderful and terrifying children’s operatic dreamscape, Babes in Toyland, as presented and performed by MasterVoices (formerly the Collegiate Chorale), the Orchestra of Saint Luke’s, and a large cast of principals at Carnegie Hall on April 27; with one additional performance scheduled at the Tilles Center of LIU Post in Brookville, New York on April 29, 2017 at 7 p.m. Dear Diary: On Thursday night, I visited Toyland! Or at least I woke up believing I did. It seemed so real, I’m going to talk to you about it like it really happened. But I guess…

PREVIEW: of the new MasterVoices concert presentation of Babes in Toyland by Victor Herbert (Carnegie Hall, New York City, April 27, 2017 at 7 p.m.); and INTERVIEW: with MasterVoices’ musical director Ted Sperling. Long before Sondheim walked on the dark side with Into the Woods, or Disney began issuing its franchise line of tailored fairy-tale musicals, composer Victor Herbert and his Broadway posse had raided the nursery cradle, character-snatching a mother lode of Mother-Goose autochthons to populate the monumental 1903 operetta, Babes in Toyland. They’re all there – Mary Quite Contrary, Tom Tom the Piper’s Son, Little Bopeep, Jack, Jill,…

PROFILE: Interview with Ted Sperling, artistic director of MasterVoices (formerly the Collegiate Chorale); PREVIEW: MasterVoices’ new presentation of J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion – Carnegie Hall, February 9, 2017. He’s soft-spoken, genial, elegantly self-possessed. It’s difficult to imagine him indulging in tirades, or hurling withering invective. He’s a nice guy. He’s also brilliant, prodigiously talented, professionally indefatigable, and apparently liked by everyone. Ted Sperling is, in short, a bit of a blessed paradox: probably the most mannerly guest at any dinner party, he is also one of today’s most accomplished, versatile – and, yes, passionate – practitioners of a craft…

If you peel back the layers of any opera company in Canada, you are likely to find Opera McGill graduates at every level: on the stage, beneath the stage, and behind the stage. Take Opéra de Montréal’s recent production of Don Giovanni, for example. While bass-baritone Gordon Bintner, who played his first Don Giovanni at McGill four years ago, reprised the title role, rising star Jordan De Souza led from the pit. Soprano Emily Dorn (Donna Anna) is an alumna, and the show’s stage director, American David Lefkowich also has connections to the program, having directed The Rake’s Progress at…

The Segal Centre’s latest mega-musical celebrates teen spirit, family, and a Canadian milestone for gay rights. In 2002, 17-year-old Marc Hall invited his boyfriend to his high school prom. His Catholic school in Oshawa, Ontario, declined Hall’s proposed guest on the grounds that homosexuality is incompatible with Catholic teaching. With support from his parents and friends, Hall took the Durham Catholic School Board to court, sparking a controversial case that questioned how the religious freedoms guaranteed in the Canadian Charter should be applied to a school receiving public funding, and about queer rights at a time when same-sex marriage had…

The Double Hudson Village Theatre, September 7 to 11 Adapted from Dostoyevsky’s 1846 novella, The Double is a rare combination of psychological thriller and slapstick comedy. Government clerk Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin meets a man who is identical in appearance but opposite in personality; whereas Golyadkin is a pushover, his doppelgänger is outgoing and daring. Featuring a live original score, this Dora Mavor Moore Award-winning satire is not to be missed. www.villagetheatre.ca My Name is Asher Lev Segal Centre, September 11 to October 2 Based on a novel of the same name by American author and rabbi Chaim Potok, My Name…
