The University of British Columbia After a year-long hiatus due to administrative changes, the Wednesday Noon Hours concert series returns to Roy Barnett Recital Hall at the University of British Columbia. This series, curated by pianist David Fung, features highly-acclaimed artists, including many who are part of the UBC community. The season opened on Sept. 10 with a performance by pianist Roman Rabinovich, who played Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 110 and Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes. Ottawa, ON: Karoline Podolak won the 2025 National Capital Opera Competition which took place on the 18th October at the Rideau Park United Church in Ottawa, ON. She was awarded with a prize of $10,000. The Competition is a showcase for Canadian singers embarking on a performance career. Nicholas Burns placed second and received $5,000. Internationally acclaimed Canadian violinist Timothy Chooi has been honored by The University of Ottawa for his eight-plus years of EDI-focused outreach and concertizing, including co-founding VISION Collective in 2018, “Folk Music Reimagined for Solo Violin,” the 2020 digital series on social media platforms launched during the worldwide Pandemic supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, inclusive concert programming, performance-based case studies, travel to remote communities to lead workshops and performances, and strategic leveraging of musical storytelling as social connection.
