Born in 1993 in Northern Iceland, Sigurdís started her musical journey with piano lessons at the age of seven, beginning with classical piano and saxophone.
Sigurdís moved to Reykjavík in 2013 to pursue jazz studies at F.Í.H School of Music with Eyþór Gunnarson and Sigurður Flosason. She relocated to Denmark when accepted at the Danish National Conservatory of Music where she earned a Master’s degree in jazz composition and piano, achieving the highest possible grade for her masters ́ project.
Sigurdís writes for large and small jazz ensembles and her work has been played by the likes of the Reykjavík Big band (Iceland) and Odense Jazz Orchestra (Denmark). She sings and plays on her debut single “I Get Along Without You Very Well” and received over 100,000 streams on Spotify. Her other projects involve imaginative new settings of Jazz Standards, as well as setting Icelandic poetry to music.
Sigurdís is a student of the Canadian composer and pianist, David Braid, who’s mentorship since 2018 significantly impacts her development as a musician. Sigurdis is currently based in Odense, pursuing a doctorate degree in composition.
“Sigurdís has a lovely piano touch and a cohesive, pianistic expression. Her compositions are personal and she has a strong expression in both her vocal and instrumental pieces. She manages to immerse the listener in her warm, melodic Nordic Noir landscape.” – Erik Ørum Von Spreckelsen, Helle Henning and Christoffer Sten Møller.
