The water is wide, I can’t cross o’er
And neither do I have wings to fly
Give me a boat, carry two
And both shall row
My love and I.
– Anon

The madrigal’s development began in the late 14th century and reached its peak in the 16th and early 17th centuries, having a profound impact on the development of music in Europe; it was a significant form of artistic choral literature during the Italian Renaissance. Emotional expression and word painting—where the music reflects the literal meaning of the lyrics. This collection of sacred and secular madrigals for some will welcome personal reminiscences while for others a delightful introduction to the Olde English Madrigals and Folk Songs from the 15th and 16th centuries. Ranging from the blush of new love and lust to certain melancholy, from glorious to giddy, this polyphony effects less with melody and rhythm and more with sheer vocal beauty and texture.
