In 1705, the 20-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach journeyed 400 kilometres on foot from Arnstadt to Lübeck to meet and learn from the great composer Dietrich Buxtehude, then aged 70. During Bach’s three-month stay he would have experienced Buxtehude’s legendary Abendmusiken, or “Evening Concerts”, with their mix of sacred vocal and instrumental music presented in St. Mary’s Church.

Our own special Abendmusik invites you to experience Buxtehude’s profound influence on Bach, and meet other musical travellers along the way: Johann Christoph Bach, Graupner, Doles, Reincken and Krebs.
