Bunnett invites several Cuban friends to join the night, including the dean of Cuban flute, Orlando “Maraca” Valle; four musicians she recorded with over 20 years ago, the Santiago Sax Quartet; and her Toronto-based piano sympatico, Hilario Durán, for some new music written just for Koerner Hall.
Bunnett has been nominated for three Grammy Awards, received The Order of Canada, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and, most recently, The Premier’s Award for Excellence. With Maqueque, she has created something new and phenomenal in the world of jazz. What started out 10 years ago as a project to record and mentor young brilliant Cuban female musicians, has become one of the top groups on the North American jazz scene, winning a Juno Award for their first album, Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, a Grammy nomination for their second release, Oddara, and, most recently, they appeared on DownBeat’s critics’ poll as one of the top ten jazz groups.
After the concert, enjoy a beverage and more music at the Postlude Performance featuring Toronto-based Guatemalan singer-songwriter Paula Sofía.
