The SPHERE festival opens in a spectacular fashion with Colombian-Canadian choreographer Andrea Peña’s UAQUE, a meditative dialogue between dance, visual arts and music. UAQUE is an evocative interdisciplinary collaboration between Andrea Peña & Artists, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky. Reflecting on the Anthropocene Epoch through a powerful performative lens, Burtynsky’s striking images are seamlessly integrated into this choreographic universe, questioning humanity’s impact on the planet. Ten dancers embody a visceral journey of resilience and vulnerability, accompanied live by the NAC Orchestra—under the direction of Alexander Shelley—and electronic music composer Eƨƨe Ran. Edward Burtynsky’s astonishing images paint a fascinating self-portrait of the planet, illustrating the complexity between sublime beauty and the ecological crisis beneath the surface. The ten dancers, in tension and conversation with these images, create a ritual of suspended time in which humans gather, making space for our nonhuman counterparts. With this work, Peña invites us to reflect on a place of communion between humanity and the earth.
