M/NM festival: Dynamite Barrel

The MNM Festival gets off to an explosive start with the Dynamite Barrel concert by the Dutch New European Ensemble (NEuE) at the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) Prepare for a motley mix where music and images intertwine in a frenzied dance, with nostalgic and playful works by Tjøgersen, Cendo, Black, Ballie and a creation by young Quebec composer Francis Battah (commissioned by the SMCQ). This program is a collection of our favourite memories from the past, full of dance, shadow theater, energetic materials, wild extended techniques on instruments, and remembrances of nostalgic moments spent watching cartoons. How many of these personal experiences remain in our memory? In today’s fast-paced life, it is easy to forget about magical moments that inspired and entertained us. How much of our childhood joy in dance, shadows and music still resides within us, waiting to be rediscovered? Exploring our past is not only a sentimental journey but also an opportunity to understand who we are now. Do we still remember how we danced without inhibition, how we created worlds using the shadows cast by our hands, how we went wild playing instruments with boundless expression? These are questions worth asking ourselves to discover how much the world of childhood might influence our adult lives. This program brings together works by composers who combined film and music to explore these various strands.
