HausMusique invites you to discover two wonderful works of English chamber music, performed by five distinguished Canadian musicians, including special guest, JUNO award-winning double bassist Joel Quarrington.
English musical tradition had been dormant for centuries when composer Ralph Vaughan Williams began taking an interest in English folksong in the early 20th century. Vaughan Williams assimilated the characteristic melodiousness of these folk songs, and created a new musical language which has inspired English composers ever since.
His early Piano Quintet is full of vigour, overflowing with sweeping melodies and lush harmony. It is notable for its inclusion of the double bass, adding a unique depth of colour to the music.
Herbert Howells was deeply influenced by the music of Vaughan Williams. Now mostly known for his choral music, his Piano Quartet, written when he was only 24, contains all the best features of the English style – bold expression, lyrical tenderness, and jovial vitality.
