HausMusique’s artistic directors Cameron Crozman and Meagan Milatz are joined by friends for a concert centred on one of classical music’s most celebrated relationships – the profound admiration Robert and Clara Schumann held for the young Johannes Brahms.
The program opens with two movements from the FAE Sonata, a collaborative work written in 1853 as a gift for violinist Joseph Joachim by Schumann, Brahms, and their mutual friend Albert Dietrich. Schumann’s contributions reveal the extremes of emotion for which he is known: from tender and introspective in the Intermezzo to over-the-top and extroverted in the Finale.
Brahms’s Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor is one of the towering works of the chamber repertoire. Clara Schumann participated in the premiere of the work, showing the strength of the friendship between Brahms and the Schumanns. The Quartet has it all: arching melodies, dramatic tension, moments of tenderness, and a rousing “Gypsy” Rondo which has made generations of audiences leap to their feet.
