Duo Concertante, one of Canada’s most prolific chamber ensembles consisting of violinist Nancy Dahn and pianist Timothy Steeves, offer a widely varied program spanning the 19th century, embracing the idea of the Romantic Salon where both known and new works were shared and appreciated among friends. Based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Duo Concertante has performed across North America, Europe, and China and received multiple ECMA (East Coast Music Awards) and MusicNL Awards, as well as a Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prize in recognition of their contribution to the arts in Canada.

Their program includes the winding and plaintive piano trio by Clara Schumann, one of the 19th century’s most important pianists. Dvorak’s songful “Four Romantic Pieces” follow, along with Beethoven’s fourth sonata for violin and piano. This work contains all the great trademarks of early Beethoven – dramatic contrasts, driving energy, and quicksilver exchanges between the violin and the piano. A Sonata for Violin and Piano by Swedish composer Amanda Maier brings the program to a close. Maier studied in Stockholm before moving to Leipzig and eventually settling in Amsterdam where she and her husband hosted and performed in musical gatherings in the company of Clara Schumann, Grieg, and Brahms, among many others. Her music is full of Scandinavian flair and tenderness, in a style similar to Dvorak’s; the sonata is a fantastic discovery recently recorded by Duo Concertante.
