On May 14, South Korean pianist Su Yeon Kim was awarded the Concours musical international de Montréal’s first prize, valued at over $180,000, which includes a performance with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, a concert tour of three North American cities and a solo album recording on the Steinway & Sons label, which will be coincidentally be her debut album. Following her pre-recorded virtual performance at the finals, which included works by Beethoven, Scriabin, Burge and Ravel, the jury noted that “her technique, her musicality, combined with a balanced and daring program choice, transcended the screen” and led to her victory.

The 27-year-old started her training at the age of 5 and pursued studies at the Korean Institute for the Gifted in Arts in Seoul, later at the Korea National University of Arts with Choong-Mo Kang, Chongpil Lim, Eunok Kim and Eunju Heo. She also has been mentored by Austrian pianist Paul Gulda. Since moving to Salzburg in 2013, she has furthered her studies with Pavel Gililov at the Mozarteum where she received both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master of Music degree with distinction.

An experienced performer, Su Yeon Kim has appeared as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de Chambre de Wallonie, the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, the Salzburg Soloist Orchestra, the Mozarteum Sinfonieorchester and the Kraków Philharmonic, among others. She has been invited to perform at major venues including the Munich Herkulessaal, the Budapest Grand Hall of the Liszt Music Academy, Milan’s Auditorium Giorgio Gaber, Salzburg’s Grosser Saal, Rome’s Parco della Musica and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. As of September, she became one of the four members of the 2021 Paris Play-Direct Academy, sponsored by Lars Vogt, which is dedicated to developing the art of playing and conducting with an orchestra in partnership with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris.
