In its Canadian premiere, the St Luke Passion by composer Krzysztof Penderecki will be presented in a display of magnificence at the Festival de Lanaudière

Joliette, March 15, 2018 – This summer, the Festival de Lanaudière will have the honour of receiving once again conductor Kent Nagano and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal(OSM). On July 14, Nagano’s musicians will take stage at the Amphithéâtre Fernand-Lindsay to interpret the Canadian premiere of the St Luke Passion composed by Krzysztof Penderecki.

Written in Germany on March 30, 1966, the St Luke Passion is one of the greatest pieces by this brilliant Polish composer. This atonal, modern piece is a poignant and tremendously powerful composition. The sound effects created by the sheer size of the orchestra and choir are perfectly fitting to convey the intensity and historical significance of The Passion of the Christ—the ultimate sacrifice and an incomparable display of love.

“This is huge for Lanaudière! This work has never been presented in Canada,” says Gregory Charles, Artistic Director of the Festival. “And the OSM has chosen to premiere it here before taking it abroad. Its complexity and impressive distribution make for an ambitious concert—one narrator, three soloists, three mixed choirs, one children’s choir, one organ, and, of course, one large orchestra. The Festival de Lanaudière should be very proud as it reinstates its reputation as a world-class event.”

This same piece will open Austria’s prestigious Salzbourg Festival. In fact, Kent Nagano and the OSM will perform the opening concert, July 20, under the theme Ouverture spirituelle, devoted to liturgical music.

Tickets are available now at lanaudiere.org or through the Place des Arts Box Office at 514-842-2112 or 1-866-842-2112Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stay tuned for the spring unveiling of the complete program!
