Montreal, Thursday, January 26, 2023 – Vocal music lovers will be delighted! Bourgie Hall welcomes, one week apart, two outstanding English vocal ensembles, The King’s Singers on February 14 and The Gesualdo Six on February 21, whose concerts in Montreal are not-to-be-missed.
On Tuesday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m., the acclaimed ensemble The King’s Singers presents Finding Harmony, a concert highlighting singing’s unifying force among people. From the Protestant Reformation to the American civil rights movement, the power of song has mobilized nations, cultures, and causes to action at various moments throughout history. Finding Harmony is evidence that music is a true common language. Each piece on the program provides the key to a fascinating tale that tells the story of who we are and what path we are traveling. Finding Harmony demonstrates how deeply we can be moved by all kinds of stories when songs connect us to them, and to one another.
Formed in 1968, The King’s Singers is acclaimed worldwide for its a capella interpretations of a vast vocal music repertoire and regularly performs on prestigious stages (Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera, Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall), radiating the joy of choral singing. The versatile ensemble performs both the traditional choral repertoire and contemporary works, in keeping with the British tradition, garnering praise from audiences and critics alike and winning several prestigious awards, including two Grammys and an Emmy. The group comprises two countertenors, a tenor, two baritones and a bass, a configuration that has remained unchanged to this day.
On Tuesday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m., The Gesualdo Six presents a wonderful concert featuring English motets from the Renaissance, a time when musical composition was prosperous but which also saw numerous social changes, as well as countless political and religious upheavals. The programme traces music written over a period of two hundred years during the Golden Age of English polyphony: florid medieval-sounding works by Sheppard and Forest, intricately woven polyphonic works by Tallis and Byrd, and the beautiful simplicity of Tomkins and White. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of his death, particular attention will be paid to the music of William Byrd, one of the most prolific composers of the Renaissance in Europe.
Founded in 2014 in Cambridge, The Gesualdo Six quickly carved out a place for itself as one of today’s most prominent vocal ensembles, specializing in the interpretation of the vast sacred music repertoire from the English Renaissance as well as contemporary works. The group has performed at numerous major festivals in the United Kingdom, Europe, North America and Australia. Recognized for their imaginative programmes as well as their impeccable performances, The Gesualdo Six provides this undefinable excitement that comes from a group of musicians singing absolutely as one.
