Saint-Sauveur, July 16, 2015 – The City of Saint-Sauveur will hold a ceremony to pay tribute to the McGarrigle sisters on July 29 at 12 p.m. in the Georges-Filion Park. Jane, Anna and Kate McGarrigle, internationally renowned singer-songwriters, lived their childhood during the 40’s and 50’s in the small French community known as Village de Saint-Sauveur. Perfectly integrated in the French Catholic community, the eldest, Jane, played organ at Sunday mass while Kate and Anna initiated their duo career singing together in the choir of the Marie-Rose public elementary school, which all three sisters attended at the time.

During the honorary ceremony, the permanent stage, commonly known as the Park Filion Stage, will be officially named the McGarrigle Stage. For the occasion, Jane and Anna McGarrigle as well as family members and close friends will be present, namely Rufus and Martha Wainwright, also internationally renowned artists and children of Kate McGarrigle who passed away in 2010.

In the course of their career, Kate and Anna McGarrigle performed on the biggest stages around the world, starting in the United States then in Europe, Australia, New-Zealand and Asia. They recorded a dozen folk music albums, two of which are in French. Many of their compositions have been covered by renowned artists such as Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Marie-Michèle Desrosiers and, more recently, Cœur de Pirate (Béatrice Martin). Gilles Vigneault, Michel Rivard and Chloé Ste-Marie are some of the great figures of the Québec culture with whom they have collaborated. Recipients of several prestigious awards and honored for their talent and exceptional work, the McGarrigle sisters have marked Québec’s history and remain, to this day, a pride for all residents of Saint-Sauveur.

Mr. Jacques Gariépy, Mayor of the City of Saint-Sauveur and host of the ceremony, said he was particularly proud of the McGarrigle sisters’ attachment to the city before declaring “The residents of Saint-Sauveur are more than happy to now have a symbol of the McGarrigles’ cultural heritage in the heart of the village.”
