The McGill Chamber Orchestra (MCO) welcomes you to its annual Benefit Gala to raise funds for its educational and outreach activities. The evening will feature a sumptuous Mexican Fiesta in celebration of Día de Muertos at the luxurious Picasso ballroom of the Sofitel Montreal on Friday, November 2 starting at 6:30 pm. Cónsul General de México Alejandro Estivill is Honorary President for the Benefit Gala evening which will be hosted by Radio-Canada’s Mario Pacquet and features performances by Mexican soprano Diana Varela and violinist Marc Djokic, concertmaster of the MCO, accompanied by Michel Alexandre Broekaert, pianist.

Delight in an open bar at cocktail hour, delicious appetizers, a gourmet three-course Mexican-inspired dinner with fine wines, and dancing, while enjoying performances by our featured soloists as well as a Mariachi band. Soprano Diana Varela began her classical singing career in Mexico, completing her studies at the University of Montreal. She has performed in opera productions in Canada and in The Netherlands, as well as with the MiaSol string ensemble, which gave her the opportunity to perform Mexican folk music. Her 2013 debut album, featuring some of the most popular boleros and folk songs of all time, was followed by her acclaimed all-Italian album, “Adagio.”

Praised by La Presse for his “rhythmic sense and natural phrasing,” violinist Marc Djokic is winner of the prestigious 2017-2018 Mécénat Musica Prix Goyer. A native of Halifax, Djokic is known for his powerful and virtuosic performances, as well as an engaging and down-to-earth approach that has made him an audience favourite across the country and beyond. The new concertmaster of the MCO, Marc recently launched his debut album, “Solo Seven” on the ATMA Classique label.

The McGill Chamber Orchestra is celebrating its 79th season. The Orchestra has toured widely presenting concerts in 17 countries on five continents to great critical acclaim. Since 2005, the MCO has been under the Artistic Direction of conductor Boris Brott, one of Canada’s most internationally renowned conductors. The orchestra is a vibrant ensemble consisting of the city’s best professional musicians and presents concerts throughout the year in the finest halls of Montreal.
