Giorgia Fumanti, one of the top classical crossover artists in the world, will join the roster of singers participating in CORONA Serenades, an initiative of La Scena Musicale designed to bring the joy of music to people in a time of adversity. The service is free for front-line care workers and those infected by the Coronavirus.

ABOUT GIORGIAORDER MEDIA

“This is a pivotal moment for people all over the world,” the Quebec-based soprano said. “The challenges are immense and we are all only human. And as humans we need music.”

GIORGIA FUMANTI

A native of Tuscany, Giorgia Fumanti discovered her voice by joining a church choir at 17. After studies at the Conservatorio di Musica Arrigo Boito in Parma she quickly came to the attention of major labels and producers on both sides of the Atlantic. Early appearances with the tenor José Carreras in a Christmas program and a performance of the national anthem at the NHL All-Star Game led to a successful recording career. Her first international release, From My Heart on EMI, reached the Billboard Top 20 Crossover Chart and No. 1 in Japan and South Africa. Other hit releases include Elysium and the recent Amour, an album of French and Quebec selections that peaked at No. 1 in Canada.

Giorgia Fumanti was named Ambassador for Peace by the Universal Peace Foundation following her performance Central Park in New York City on the International Day of Peace. Other honours include the Public’s Choice Award conferred at the Kremlin in Moscow by the AMA Music Awards, the Premio Lunezia Nel Mondo Award in Carrara, Italy and Personality of the Year by the CIBPA Association in Montreal.

CORONA Serenades is a project of La Scena Musicale. Trained singers deliver personalized video and audio serenades, keeping people in touch. The service is free for those infected by the coronavirus and front-line healthcare workers. Others are asked to make a donation.

“We want to spread some joy in this time of uncertainty,” said Wah Keung Chan, founder of La Scena Musicale and the Singing Valentines. “There are many musicians and singers who are out of work and suffering,” added tenor Adrian Rodriguez, who developed the idea with Chan. “The donations will help relieve some of the burden while allowing them to put their talent to good use.” The initiative also allows readers to support La Scena Musicale, which faces a substantial loss of advertising revenue owing to the pandemic.

Statement for Giorgia Fumanti

This is a pivotal moment for people all over the world. The challenges are immense and we are all only human. And as humans we need music. Many are talking about essential services. The arts are essential and music is the most essential of the arts. This is why I am not only pleased but proud to be part of the CORONA Serenades. I hope my fellow Quebecers and lovers of music everywhere support this wonderful initiative.

Questions & Answers

How has the crisis affected you?

Concerts in New York City (Times Square) in China and here in Quebec are cancelled for the time being. My parents are in Italy. Because I live so far away I am worried about them – and for the situation that everybody is living through. I live in the Laurentians near the forest so I can enjoy the beauty of nature with my three daughters and husband. I pray and hope that things will get better soon for everybody. I discovered a new way of reaching my audience via private live concerts on Facebook. This works very well with many viewers from everywhere in the world. I can still be near my audience and fulfill myself with the magic of music.

What are your five favourite operas?

I really love Puccini and Tosca, La Bohème and Madama Butterfly. I also love Verdi’s La Traviata and Aida.

What movies, television shows and books do you recommend?

I am not really a fan of television shows but enjoy good movies like Patch Adams, La vita e’ bella, Forrest Gump and just about every Disney movie. And I love the books of Eckhart Tolle like The Power of Now.

Why did you join Corona Serenades?

It is a beautiful initiative by La Scena Musicale to provide beautiful music that has always been a therapy for me. Hopefully it will make many feel better in these challenging times.
