The Obsession With Her Voice
Erika Angell
Constellation Records, 2024

After a long career, notably as the leader of Thus Owls, a group known for their interdisciplinary and interactive performances, Swedish-born Montreal singer-songwriter Erika Angell takes the plunge with her first solo album. The Obsession With Her Voice sounds like an act of (re)birth for this indie artist with a passion for experimental music. Listening carefully, the tracks on this album reflect Angell’s desire to exist artistically—to find the fullness of her musical personality. The result is a well-considered, independent foray for an artist best known for her highly acclaimed collaborations with artists such as Patrick Watson and Marie-Pierre Arthur, among others.

Without doubt, this musical project was a veritable baptism by fire for Erika Angell, given the great complexity of its approach, which alternates the poetic vocal lines with musical variations that blend various musical influences: electro, rock, jazz, pop and chamber music. The improvisation carried out in the studio by this artist and her collaborators have resulted in a cross-genre poetic-musical work that foreshadows a promising future career.
