The Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal pays a dazzling tribute to the great female jazz composers of yesterday and today, conducted by Marianne Trudel.
The ONJ is embarking on an ambitious celebration of the women composers who have left their mark on the history of jazz, and those who are writing its contemporary pages. Under the inspired direction of Marianne Trudel, the ONJ will present an exceptional program featuring works by Mary Lou Williams, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Maria Schneider, Satoko Fujii, Anna Webber and by the artistic director herself.
A historical and contemporary panorama of women’s jazz
This unique concert takes us on a journey through time and continents, from the haunting rhythms of bebop pioneer Mary Lou Williams to the avant-garde explorations of Satoko Fujii and the majestic orchestrations of Maria Schneider. Each composer represents an essential chapter in the evolution of jazz, too often obscured in traditional accounts.
Marianne Trudel, conductor and artistic link
Both interpreter and creator, Marianne Trudel is the perfect embodiment of this living heritage. Her sensitive yet rigorous approach promises to reveal the full richness of these works, while underscoring the invisible links that unite these artists through time. His own musical language, both personal and universal, is a natural extension of this tradition.
The ONJ, instrument of a musical revolution
The orchestra will deploy all the power and subtlety of its playing to serve these demanding scores. From the energetic swings of Toshiko Akiyoshi to the rhythmic complexities of Anna Webber and the impressionistic colors of Marianne Trudel, the ONJ musicians will rise to the challenge with their characteristic talent.
An evening to rewrite history
More than just a concert, this event is an official recognition of the fundamental role played by women in the development of jazz. Through six distinct but complementary musical voices, audiences will discover how these artists have constantly pushed back the boundaries of the genre.
Join us on October 30, 2025 for this historic celebration where creative daring meets deserved artistic recognition. Place des Arts’ Cinquième Salle will vibrate to the rhythm of these masterpieces finally brought to light.
