As part of an artist residency and under the musical direction of Lorraine Vaillancourt, Montreal painter, director, and writer Mario Côté captures the numerous rehearsals and concerts of Montreal’s NEM (Nouvel Ensemble Moderne), a chamber orchestra specializing in contemporary music. In this work, he follows the creative process from the first notes of the musical compositions to the public performances.
The first part, Earth, Stone and War, features two Ukrainian composers, Valentin Silvestrov and Alla Zagaykevych. The second, Earth, Stone and Fire, presents the works of Nina Šenk, Vito Žuraj of Slovenian origin, and the Czech Martin Smolka.
The five videos, forming a single experience, are linked by recurring visual motifs and bring forth images that border on the documentary form while seeking to reveal the poetic and experimental aspect of the music.
