New York, NY (October 9, 2023) —The Metropolitan Opera opens its 2023–24 Live in HD season with Jake Heggie’s masterpiece Dead Man Walking on Saturday, October 21, at 12:55PM ET—the first of three works from recent years to be presented live in cinemas this season. Even nearly 100 years since Puccini’s death. La Bohème remains one of his most beloved and frequently performed operas. This COC revival production has now been staged three times in the past 10 years, yet it has a fresh feel. It also features the most diverse cast that has graced the Toronto stage in recent memory. Rodolfo, Marcello, Schaunard and Colline are four impoverished friends who share a flat they can barely afford. One Christmas eve, while Rodolfo is working alone, his neighbour, the beautiful but frail Mimi, knocks on his door asking for help to light her candle. The…
In September 2022, City Opera Vancouver broke new ground with the world première of Chinatown. The commission remains one of the only operas in existence to be sung in Hoisan, a Chinese dialect, and the first opera to be written about one of Canada’s many Chinatown districts. Now, one year later, Chinatown is set to reach a wider audience with the release of its original cast recording, on Halifax-based record label Leaf Music. Chinatown is the fourth commission by City Opera Vancouver in its 17-year history. The company is committed to the creation of purposeful works that showcase Canadian themes…

Soprano McKenzie Warriner has demonstrated her immense dedication to music since an early age. Growing up in rural Saskatchewan, she travelled more than 200 kilometres to Regina for voice lessons. Her unwavering commitment to her music education has since led her to complete an undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba, and a Master’s of Music at Eastman. “Contemporary music is the sound world I am most drawn to,” said Warriner with pride. It therefore comes as no surprise that she was attracted to the Eckhardt-Gramatté competition, which focuses on contemporary and Canadian music. Warriner was confident in her competition…
In her role as the 2023-24 composer-in-residence for the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (TMChoir), Tracy Wong is not only thinking like a composer, she approaches her work with the mindset of an educator, a conductor, a vocalist, and a cultural translator. Under the baton of Artistic Director Jean-Sébastien Vallée, the TMChoir and the Toronto Children’s Chorus (TCC) will première Wong’s new composition, Patah Tumbuh, which translates from Malay to “broken – renewed,” alongside Orff’s Carmina Burana and Brahms’s Schicksalslied, as part of their Oct. 26 and Oct. 27 concerts at Roy Thomson Hall. As soon as the Ontario-based composer learned her…
When Montreal-based composer Jaap Nico Hamburger first read Dutch author Ariëlla Kornmehl’s debut novel De Familie Goldwasser (The Goldwasser Family) in the early aughts, he thought to himself, “this is opera.” Now, many years after that initial inspiration and over a decade since he began composing, he is finally seeing his vision come to life. On Oct. 22 (Koerner Hall), Oct. 28 (Maison symphonique), and Oct. 29 (Salle Raoul-Jobin), GFN Productions will present excerpts from Hamburger’s first opera Ariella, paired with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The tour will be conducted by Francis Choinière and features the Ensemble Classico-Moderne and…
“I love seeing my voice as an algebra problem I need to solve,” said soprano Anna-Sophie Neher, one of two Canadian laureates from the Queen Elisabeth Competition. Her unique approach to practising as an objective science clearly helps her put in the countless hours needed for success. Neher has evidently managed the mental battle all musicians face; she has a methodical, yet human, approach to the ins-and-outs of her professional life. A self-proclaimed “overthinker,” Neher is determined to use the challenges associated with competition to improve her confidence and lessen her self-criticism. “I think that you can only feel truly…
If you asked a younger Ian Sabourin what he wanted to be when he grew up, the countertenor and 2023 Atelier Lyrique Stingray Star Prize winner would not have answered “famous opera singer,” but rather “rock star.” Indeed, Sabourin’s love for music was ignited in two places: the Ottawa Choir of Men and Boys rehearsal hall, and at a Green Day concert he attended at age 8. These opposite genres remained a part of Sabourin’s life until university, at which point he made the decision to focus solely on classical singing. His choice to enter the Atelier competition was somewhat…
Elisabeth St-Gelais stands out as an unstoppable young professional. Along with winning the prestigious Prix d’Europe competition, she was named a Révélation Classique by Radio-Canada. From a young age, St-Gelais remembers looking forward to learning about the annual recipients of this title, and dreaming about one day seeing herself in the announcement. These two major accomplishments have left St-Gelais feeling ready to continue her work as a freelance soloist in what has quickly become a completely booked upcoming year. This year marked her second time participating in the Prix d’Europe (she advanced to the semifinal round in 2022). Having previous…
