Cuban guitarist, composer, and arranger Josué Tacoronte presents a concert that captures the cultural and folkloric essence of the place where he was born—and where the guitar has taken him.
Born in Havana and classically trained at the Amadeo Roldán National Conservatory, Tacoronte has built a career bringing Cuban traditions into dialogue with Spanish flamenco and other Latin American influences. His work covers researching, arranging, performing, and recording the Cuban guitar repertoire by Leo Brouwer and Ernesto Lecuona. His album Brouwer Flamenco, produced by Brouwer, earned him the Best Concert Interpreter award at Cuba’s 2013 CUBADISCO Awards. Tacoronte is a frequent collaborator in Vancouver’s vibrant Flamenco community, Tacoronte is a frequent collaborator in Vancouver’s vibrant Flamenco community, and with a diverse range of BC’s top musicians.
Tacoronte is joined by trombonist Jeremy Berkman, a Juilliard and Oberlin graduate and principal trombonist with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and Turning Point Ensemble, which he co-founded. Berkman has appeared on more than 40 recordings and received a Juno Award nomination as a member of Peggy Lee’s ensemble. The two previously collaborated on Tacoronte’s Elementos (Zapateado Flamenco), and Berkman’s Simply Lyrical program of classical, folk, popular, and jazz traditions.
