Supernatural creatures from pre-Islamic Arabian mythology, the djinns originated in the Near East and permeated many pagan and Christian beliefs well into the 19th century. The writer Victor Hugo made them the subject of one of his most beautiful poems, “Les Djinns” (The Djinns), written in 1829, which has become one of the masterpieces of Western literature.
Did Mendelssohn read “Les Djinns”? A great question! What is certain is that this somewhat malevolent theme was in l’air du temps (the famous German Zeitgeist!) when he wrote his 3rd and 4th symphonies between 1829 and 1842, and there is no doubt that the 4th movement of the composer’s Italian Symphony almost perfectly captures the material and structure of the poem, with its breathless rhythm and evocative, even Dantean, harmonies:
Galileo will be offering a live version of this in less than a month at his concert “Mendelssohn travels!”
