Investment in arts and culture has benefited society throughout history as evidenced in the body of work we admire today. For centuries, affluent patrons have supported artists and provided venues showcasing artists’ work. In the 15th century, Lorenzo de Medici was a patron of Renaissance art, supporting Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and other notable artists. During the 19th century, Andrew Carnegie, a steel magnate, funded libraries and institutions, and was instrumental in the realization of Carnegie Hall, a major classical music landmark in New York.
In 2013, the Task Force on Cultural Philanthropy chaired by Pierre Bourgie compelled the Quebec government to make changes to cultural philanthropy which included renewing the Mécénat Placements Culture matching program for endowment funds and introducing an additional tax credit for a one-time large cultural donation ($5,000-$25,000).
Mécénat Musica was created at this time by donors—to help donors and their organizations effectively navigate these new changes. To date, Mécénat Musica has steered more than 50 organizations to greater financial security through its endowment matching program, and raised $111 million of permanent capital. This permanent capital generates $5.5 million in annual distributions supporting more than 5,000 artists. Since 2015, over $25 million of investment income distributions have been made.
