Ottawa, ON — April 24, 2026 — OrKidstra – Sistema Ottawa (OrKidstra) is proud and grateful to announce it has received a $554,000 Grow Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to expand its free after-school social development through music programs for children and youth in equity-deserving neighbourhoods in Ottawa.
Over the next three years, this investment is expected to support approximately 285 young people ages 5 to 18, with a focus on children ages 5 to 12, through expanded programming in the Heron Gate and Carlington communities – two neighbourhoods where equity-focused investment in accessible youth programming can have meaningful impact.
OrKidstra’s programs are inspired by El Sistema, a globally recognized movement that began in Venezuela and uses ensemble music-making as a tool for social development. Through collaborative learning and performance, young people build confidence, leadership, life skills, and a strong sense of belonging.
Artistic Managing Director and Co-Founder Emerita Tina Fedeski said: “Every day, I see how music helps young people build confidence, connection, and a sense of belonging. Over the years, I have watched students grow in remarkable ways, supported by a community that believes in their potential.”
Led by professional Teaching Artists and staff, participants engage in foundational music learning experiences to group singing, instrumental instruction, performance opportunities and community-building activities in a supportive and inclusive environment.
“This funding will help us reach more young people with consistent, high-quality programming in their own communities,” said Carrie Lauzon, Executive Managing Director of OrKidstra. “It creates more opportunities for kids to grow, discover their strengths, and build the skills and confidence they need to succeed and find their place in the world with purpose. By investing in many voices and experiences, we are helping build a more inclusive and connected future for everyone.”
The project will strengthen OrKidstra’s after-school Hub at the Heron Road Community Centre in Heron Gate and establish a new Hub in Carlington in partnership with the Carlington Community Health Centre.
Participants will attend programs one to three times per week from September to June, with additional opportunities such as summer programming. In addition to music education and instrument loans, youth can participate in targeted leadership initiatives designed to foster confidence, teamwork, and personal growth.
By removing financial barriers and centering community, this initiative will help more young people access supportive after-school opportunities that strengthen individual growth and community connection.
