Henry From wins 2024 Shean Piano Competition

Edmonton, AB, Saturday, May 18, 2024 | After two days of amazing and very high calibre competition – pianist Henry From (20-years-old), from Bellingham, Washington, who is currently studying with John O’Conor at The Glenn Gould School, and previously studied with Amanda Chan and Edward Top at the Vancouver Academy of Music, was awarded the $8,000 top prize in The Shean Piano Competition. Mr. From has also won the opportunity to play with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at a future date. Mr. From was one of 6 finalists chosen from the 22 submitted entries to compete in The 2024 Shean Piano Competition on May 17 and 18 in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

The complete results of the Competition are as follows (hometowns in parentheses):

1. First Place and $8,000, plus the opportunity to play with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra – Henry From (Bellingham, WA)
2. Second Place and $5,000 – Jingzi (Linda) Ruan (Surrey, BC)
3. Third Place and $4,000 – Carter Johnson (Campbell River, BC)
4. Fourth Place and $3,000 – Dane Ko (Mississauga, ON)
5. Fifth Place and $2,000 – Gabriel Landstedt (Los Lunas, NM)
6. Sixth Place and $2,000 – Adam Sun (Burnaby, BC)

Henry From also won the $1,000 Paul J. Bourret Memorial Award for Best Performance of the Test Piece – 6 Wiener Tänze nach Motiven von Eduard Gärtner (mvts. i. Tempo di Valse lente; & ii. Vivo e sciolto) by Ignaz Friedman.

The adjudicators for this year’s Shean Piano Competition were David Hoyt, Chair; Ian Parker, and Joachim Segger.

The 2025 Shean Strings Competition (for violin, viola, and violoncello) takes place May 16 and 17, 2025 in Edmonton with an $8,000 Top Prize and the opportunity to perform with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. The $1,000 Paul J. Bourret Memorial Award for Best Performance of the Test Piece will also be awarded.
