Message from the Artistic Director

In our 15th anniversary season, we are grateful to finally be able to welcome our audience back in person. Nothing can compare with the intensity and emotion of a concert where artist and public are able to meet face-to-face. It is the intense energy between attentive listener and gifted artist, this give-and-take, which makes a live performance infinitely exciting and so unique.

The idea to feature the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in Montreal was born in a café on Crescent Street. Looking back on this journey, I am thankful to the Montreal public for having been so welcoming and supportive all these years.

We are thrilled to open this 15th anniversary edition with Bach’s festive Christmas Oratorio, which will be presented by the Festival’s orchestra and choir, under the direction of Václav Luks. To celebrate this milestone, the concert will be presented in Quebec City as well as in Montreal.

Also we are eager to acquaint you with two of the most prominent Bach interpreters of our time.

Daniel Johannsen will be singing the part of the Evangelist in the Christmas Oratorio and Benedikt Kristjánsson will take over all the singing parts in a highly personal version of the St. John Passion.

What’s more, l’Orchestre de l’Agora will perform all six Brandenburg Concertos and it will be a great honour to have pianist Sergei Babayan back with us as well as to welcome Martin Helmchen on his first visit to the Festival.

For information on the many concerts to be discovered, please visit our website FestivalBachMontreal.com for the detailed programming and any updates.

Needless to say, the safety of our public and artists remains our chief concern, and we will stay alert and flexible in this continuing pandemic situation.

Do not worry if you are unable to attend in person, as some of the Festival’s concerts will once again be offered on our streaming platform Canada Classique.

We would like to invite our dear public to embark with us on this season’s musical journey. We have had to do without the vitality and force of live concerts for so long. Be assured that we will do our very best to make your experience at our Festival Bach Montréal a memorable one.
