Born in 1981 in Istanbul, Turkey, Selcuk Suna comes from a family of musicians. His father, a professor of Traditional Turkish Music at Istanbul University, and his brother, a violinist and songwriter, introduced him to the music world at a very young age. At age 8, he joined the children’s opera at the Atatürk Cultural Centre (AKM). He began studying clarinet at age 11, and at 17 transitioned to the saxophone. By 18, he was performing on various television programs and working with prominent pop artists across Turkey.
Selcuk studied clarinet at the Istanbul Conservatory during high school and won numerous vocal competitions. He later received a full scholarship to study Jazz Performance (Saxophone) at Bilgi University, Istanbul, where he earned his degree in Jazz Music. He has studied saxophone with the renowned Ricky Ford and music theory with the late Butch Morris.
Selcuk has performed on stage with internationally known artists, including Shakira. In Turkey, he played for 13 years on the popular Friday late-night program Beyaz Show, and performed extensively with leading Turkish pop stars such as Ajda Pekkan, Kayahan, Sezen Aksu and Mustafa Ceceli. He has recorded saxophone and clarinet for countless albums, theme music, television shows, and musicals, and also contributes to vocal recordings. In addition, he has composed music for theatre productions.
Selcuk currently resides in Toronto, Canada, working as a freelance musician. His 1st album Turkish Standards / Non-Standard and his most recent release The Space Between are available online; his new album is nominated for CFMA (Canadian Folk Music Awards).
