The New Orford String Quartet returns to Chamberfest with a compelling programme of works inspired by, and dedicated to beloved musical figures. This acclaimed Canadian ensemble offers an eclectic selection of string quartets shaped by the art and artists of their time. While the dedications behind Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 18 and Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 reflect familiar sources – a patron of the arts and the composer’s sister, respectively – Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1, nicknamed the “Kreutzer,” takes an unexpected turn. Contrary to assumption, the piece is not dedicated to violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer (to whom Beethoven dedicated his famous Violin Sonata No. 9). Instead, its inspiration lies in Leo Tolstoy’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata, which was itself a response to Beethoven’s iconic sonata. How remarkable that one violinist could ignite such a rich artistic lineage across music and literature! Also featured on this evening’s programme is a stunning new work by Canadian composer Cecilia Livingston. Premiered in 2025, After the Wind is dedicated to the Quartet itself. With their signature panache and poise, the New Orford String Quartet curates a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant evening of music. This is a concert not to be missed!
