ONJ presents « Concerto Interesctions »

The Orchestre national de Jazz de Montréal (ONJ) winds down the first half of its ninth concert season with a premiere of a work in three movements for jazz orchestra and percussion, with guest soloist Marie-Josée Simard. True to the three-part form of the classical concerto, with its fast, slow and fast movements, this work is given an original twist in that three different composers have been each assigned a movement, these being Christine Jensen, Marianne Trudel and Jean-Nicolas Trottier. Also on the program are some works by Mike Manieri and Frank Zappa written and adapted for jazz orchestra.

Concerto Intersections

First Movement Delta Variations by Christine Jensen opens the work and sets its basic tone.

Second Movement Des Résonances et d’Échos by Marianne Trudel, establishes entrancing sonorities that soloist produces by using a bow on the vibraphone and crotals.

Third Movement – Spirales by Jean-Nicolas Trottier brings the concerto to a close with subtle rhythmic interplay that will showcase the soloist to full advantage.

In a career spanning four decades, Marie-Josée Simard has premiered 13 concertos for vibraphone with a range of symphonic orchestras and string ensembles. The idea for this fourteenth premiere with the ONJ came about in 2019 when she thought of commissioning composer fluent in both jazz and symphonic music to write a piece for her..
