German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser has been hailed by Gramophone magazine as “one of the finest among the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists.” Among his awards and honours is Second Prize at the 2002 International Tchaikovsky Competition. For his recordings he has won the Deutschen Schallplattenkritik Prize and the Diapason d’Or. Moser is renowned for his efforts to expand the repertory, with particular emphasis on new music by composers like Julia Wolfe, Detlev Glanert, Nina Young, and Minas Borboudakis. He has performed with most of the world’s top orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra and Boston Symphony, among many others. He is a voracious reader and an avid outdoorsman, with special interests in hiking and mountain biking. LMMC debut.
Moser’s partner for this program of Beethoven cello sonatas is Montreal-born Marc-André Hamelin. Hamelin ranks among the elite of the piano world for his unrivaled blend of probing musicianship and phenomenal technical prowess. His discography numbers over 00 discs for the Hyperion label, several of which have won prestigious awards. In recognition of his remarkable discography, he was inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame in June 2015. He has been an Officer of the Order of Canada since 2003 and a Chevalier de l’Ordre du Québec since 2004; he is also a member of the Royal Society of Canada. He has won eight Juno Awards and twelve GRAMMY nominations. Hamelin is also a composer; among his works is a set of piano etudes in all the minor keys. 5th LMMC appearance.
