Song of the Hands(original title:El canto de las manos), directed by María Valverde, is a documentary that follows the artistic and human journey of the Coro de Manos Blancas, an ensemble of deaf and hard‑of‑hearing musicians from Venezuela. The film follows the group in an ambitious artistic adventure: participating in a new interpretation of Ludwig van Beethoven’s opera Fidelio in sign language.

Under the impetus of conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the project explores how music can be experienced and conveyed beyond sound. The documentary delves into the different stages of this creative process — auditions, rehearsals and production preparation — while closely following several members of the choir in their daily lives.

The film highlights the stories of three young deaf musicians — Jennifer, Gabriel and José — who are preparing to take on the challenge of bringing this singular interpretation of Beethoven’s work to the stage. Through their personal experiences, the film addresses the obstacles they face, including social exclusion and the prejudices associated with deafness.

Projection suivie d’une discussion inédite avec María Valverde, Gustavo Dudamel et Rafael Payare (Directeur musical de l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal).
