The two quintets of this sublime double bill were written in very close succession, in April and May 1787. Their proximity has perpetually elicited reflection and discussion, chiefly with regard to their contrasting natures. K. 515 in C major is sunny, bountiful and optimistic, whereas K. 516 in G minor is predominantly dark, tragic and despairing.
