German composer Georg Philip Telemann’s 1737 celebrity trip makes front-page news; his love for the French style does not go unnoticed and his music echos through Parisian streets for decades to come.
Black composer and violinist Joseph Bologne commissions and premieres six Paris Symphonies from Franz Joseph Haydn in 1786. Bologne’s own music has caught the ear of Marie-Antoinette (and all of Paris). Only the French Revolution, and racism, will cut short his exceptional career.
In the early 20th century, the legend of Django Reinhardt is quite literally forged in fire. The Romani-French guitarist and composer survives a disfiguring inferno and goes on to define the sound of Parisian jazz.
Young American composer Philip Glass travels to Paris in 1964 to study, discovering the films of Jean Cocteau and the Bohemian lifestyle along the way.
The programme closes with a 2014 work by ADLF co-Director Aleks Schürmer. Paris en feu, un jour, si tu le veux (« Gorgeous, reflective music » —BBC Radio 3) asks the listener to sit with the uncomfortable truth that we participate in our own oppression, borrowing from (and distorting) a melody by Michel Legrand.
Explore Paris through epochs of change and revolution—a city in perpetual reinvention, where 18th century elegance, Jazz and minimalist pulses all burn brilliantly side by side.
