Last Thursday, the Federal Government of Canada announced its Budget 2022, and within it, there was some significant news for the arts sector. Starting in 2022-23, $12.1 million will be provided to Ottawa’s National Arts Centre over two years to support the creation, co-production, promotion, and touring of productions with Canadian commercial and not-for-profit performing arts companies. This move would give valuable, and unusual, exposure to NAC productions outside of the national capital. Update: Dec. 22 Today, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, announced the federal government’s intention to temporarily expand eligibility for key support programs to ensure Canadians are protected and workers and businesses get the help they need to sustain them through new and necessary public health restrictions. Using regulatory authority provided in Bill C-2, the government intends to introduce new regulations that would: Expand the Local Lockdown Program to include employers subject to capacity-limiting restrictions of 50 per cent or more; and reduce the current-month revenue decline threshold requirement to 25 per cent. Update: Dec. 22 The federal government’s Bill C-2 passed into law last Friday, Dec. 17. The online application is now open as of Dec. 21. The Tourism and Hospitality Recovery Program (THRP) that gives up to 75% of wages and rent is also available to Arts and Cultural organizations that are “organizing, promoting, hosting, supporting or participating in events that meet the artistic or cultural interests of patrons, such as: live performances and exhibits intended for public viewing.” See here for information and to apply. Montreal, September 15, 2021 – The Orchestre Métropolitain (OM) and its artistic director and principal conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin today introduced the next-generation conductors who will take part in the first edition of the Academy of Orchestral Conducting. Selected after a call for applications launched earlier this summer, six young talents were chosen from a field of 32. They are: Monica Chen (British Columbia); Marie-Claire Cardinal (Quebec); Benoît Gauthier (Quebec); Félix Ste-Marie (Quebec); Trevor Wilson (Ontario); Naomi Woo (Manitoba). Alarming reports on the precarious situation of artists are multiplying here as elsewhere. Many artists now have no choice but to put their careers on hold to find living-wage employment. The most recent alarm bell came from the Quebec Musicians’ Guild, which published, at the end of October, the results of a survey stating that one musician in five has chosen to abandon his career.
