How Like a Golden Dream
Duo Oriana: Sinéad White, soprano; Jonathan Stuchbery, lute and theorbo; Louise Hung, organ
Leaf Music, 2023

The selection comprises 13 songs performed on lute and voice. This combination of instruments, though particularly well suited for spiritual, traditional, folk and original compositions by Jonathan Stuchbery, is not frequently heard. Expressive modal lines support Sinéad White’s gorgeous subtle vocal palette, as the duo journeys collaboratively through a selection of songs spanning centuries. They masterfully evoke the feelings of “darkness, mystery, grief, rest and quiet.” White’s focused articulation facilitates an appreciation of those songs that are in English, such as My Lagan Love. Traditional Irish favourites like Seo hu leo are recognizably soothing. Noticeably, the balance and rhythmic ensemble are impeccable. Stuchbery’s arpeggiated accompaniment is flawlessly supportive of White’s ebbs and flows throughout, exuding trusted communication by rubatos that never exaggerate. Highlights include the wistful lute performance in Caiones, the embellished vocal lines and the rhythmic precision which contextualizes their rhythmic freedom, and the vocal layering echo-like effects in Tu dormi by composer Jacopo Peri. The collection is capped with the collaboration of Louise Hung, who makes a worthy and memorable contribution on the continuo organ in two last pieces by Francesca Caccini.
