Today, the Canadian Opera Company announced a cast change for their upcoming winter run of Verdi’s Rigoletto. American soprano Andrea Carroll has withdrawn from singing the role of Gilda. In her place, two Canadian sopranos have been cast. Sarah Dufresne will appear in four performances (Jan. 24, 28, Feb. 6 and 8) and Andriana Chuchman, in the final three (Feb. 10, 12 and 14).  Dufresne recently sang her first Gilda at Pacific Opera Victoria in April 2025 and then reprised the role at Vancouver Opera to open their 2025-26 season. We know “Christmas Time is Here” in Montreal when the Taurey Butler Trio comes back to play their annual Charlie Brown Christmas concert at Salle Bourgie. For the 11th time, Taurey Butler on piano, Morgan Moore on double bass, and Wali Muhammad on drums performed the classic score from A Charlie Brown Christmas, composed by Vince Guaraldi. There are as many versions of Handel’s oratorio, Messiah, as there are performances, which in Canada, are almost too many to count over the holiday season. Quebec is known for its great tradition of a capella choral singing. Art Choral is a unique project that follows the history of choral singing performed by professional singers since 2020. It includes works by 50 composers from the 1500s to today, including Québec, Canadian and Jewish composers. At this time of the year, it’s expected that at least one choir and orchestra will perform Handel’s Messiah in most Canadian cities. The oratorio composed in 1741 has become so synonymous with the season that, for some, it is a yearly tradition to attend a performance.
