Montreal, October 23, 2023 – As part of the Vanda Treiser opera series, the Orchestre Classique de Montréal (OCM) continues its 84th season by offering a taste of Argentina with the presentation of the tango opera María de Buenos Aires by the renowned composer Astor Piazzolla. The performance, under the direction of Jacques Lacombe, will be held on Thursday, November 23, at 7:30 p.m., at the Pierre-Mercure Hall.

Passion for music, passion for tango: the ghost of María cannot be ignored in this dramatic concert version of the tango ‘operita’, a surrealist work with three characters, performed in Spanish with English and French surtitles.

Rarely presented, this operatic homage by Piazzolla to the secret urban world which saw the birth of the tango, will highlight the rich and emotionally charged voice of mezzo-soprano Julie Nesrallah (Maria), the suavity of baritone Clarence Frazer (El Payador), and the charm of actor Victor Andrés Trelles Turgeon (El Duende).

This production will be semi-staged and will include tango dance elements with Alejandro Villa‘s dance group, Corazon de tango.

I was literally overwhelmed when I saw Maria de Buenos Aires on stage for the first time and I can’t wait to introduce our audience to this moving work. » says Jacques Lacombe, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the OCM.

The concert is presented by Ms. Vanda Treiser, and in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Republic of Argentina in Montreal as well as CARI St-Laurent – services for immigrants.

Previously named the McGill Chamber Orchestra, the OCM quickly became one of Canada’s most established chamber orchestras, touring five continents, recording extensively, and appearing regularly on radio and television. Boris Brott, OC, OQ, the elder son of Alexander and one of Canada’s most internationally renowned conductors, led the OCM from 2000 until his death in April 2022. The OCM is a vibrant, innovative, and flexible ensemble consisting of the city’s best professional musicians now in residence at the Salle Pierre-Mercure. Fulfilling its mission of celebrating diversity and inclusivity, the OCM has created the program Music for Everyone which enables collaborations with numerous new immigrant communities and Montreal organizations in making OCM’s performances accessible to all.
