Montreal, April 23rd, 2025. Clavecin en concert is pleased to announce a concert by French harpsichordist Pierre Hantaï on Tuesday, May 6th in Bourgie Hall at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. In the first half, Pierre Hantaï presents works of his choice. In the second half, the harpsichordist tackles Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations BWV 988, which have played a central role in the harpsichordist’s life from an early age. At 28, he recorded them in a version that is still among the most admired.

“After the Goldberg Variations, we close our eyes and surrender to the echo they have created within us. There’s nothing left but a contentless fullness, which is the only way to be close to the Supreme “.  Cioran, Aveux et anathèmes, 1987.

As a child, Pierre Hantaï was passionate about painting, but his encounter with Bach’s music set him on the path to becoming his own. Gustav Leonhardt’s harpsichord recordings had a profound effect on him. For two years, Leonhardt invited him to benefit from his teaching at his Amsterdam home. From an early age, he played with the leading figures in the small world of early music, including the Kuijken brothers, Gustav Leonhardt, Philippe Herreweghe and Jordi Savall. At the same time, he founded several ensemble groups: the “Lous Landes Consort”, which won first prize at the Bruges chamber music competition, and “le Concert Français”, the first stage of what was to become a chamber orchestra a few years later.

Although he is invited to conduct various chamber orchestras and teach masterclasses in many countries, it is as a soloist that he most often performs. The coming year will see him perform in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Estonia, Japan, China, Taiwan… When he takes to the stage, he tries to reconnect with what has always characterized transmission in musical cultures, but which we have gradually lost in the field of so-called “classical” music: the spirit of communion, the joy of the unexpected and of discovery, which he wants to rediscover both for the audience and for himself.
