Montreal, April 11, 2022The Orchestre classique de Montréal (OCM) will share the stage with the excellent Ensemble Caprice in a co-production led by conductor Matthias Maute on Thursday, April 28, 7:30 p.m. at the Salle Pierre-Mercure. Presented by RPIA, the concert will also feature the renowned Quebec soprano Karina Gauvin.

The aria ‘’Lascia ch’io pianga’’ will be dedicated to the memory of Maestro Brott, who tragically passed away on April 5. A tribute to him, the details of which will be announced shortly, will be performed in the coming months.

The OCM and Ensemble Caprice will join forces on themes from Handel’s Water Music, conducted by Matthias Maute. The musicians will transport the audience to a riparian paradise in this co-production of the two Montreal orchestras.

The great Quebec soprano Karina Gauvin will perform Handel’s most virtuosic arias interspersed with works by two Montreal composers: A world premiere composition by Dutch-Canadian Jaap Nico Hamburger and Alexander Brott’s Arabesque, featuring the OCM’s accomplished principal cellist Chloé Dominguez.

Recognized for her work in the Baroque repertoire, Karina Gauvin has been awarded several honours throughout her career, including Soloist of the Year by the Communauté international des radios publiques de langue française, First Prize in the CBC Young Performers Competition, and the Virginia Parker Prize. She has collaborated with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Montreal Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, as well as a number of Baroque orchestras such as Les Talens Lyrique, the Venice Baroque Orchestra, the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Les Violons du Roy.

As part of its 82nd season, entitled ‘’Women of Distinction,’’ the OCM honours a great woman outside the music world who has left her mark on the community at each concert. At the concert, the OCM will pay tribute to the Honourable Monique Bégin, one of the first women from Quebec to be elected to the federal Parliament and also a minister in Pierre Trudeau’s cabinet.

The tribute to the Honourable Monique Bégin is generously sponsored by the Joint Chair in Women’s Studies at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, of which Dr. Bégin was the first Chair.

About the OCM

The Orchestre Classique de Montréal (OCM) was founded in 1939 by violinist, conductor, and composer Alexander Brott and cellist and manager Lotte Brott. Previously named the McGill Chamber Orchestra, the OCM quickly became one of Canada’s most established chamber orchestras, touring five continents, recording extensively, and appearing regularly on radio and television. Boris Brott, OC, OQ, the elder son of Alexander and one of Canada’s most internationally renowned conductors, led the OCM from 2000 until his death in April 2022. The OCM is a vibrant, innovative, and flexible ensemble consisting of the city’s best professional musicians presenting concerts throughout the year and now in residence at the Salle Pierre-Mercure. Fulfilling its mission of celebrating diversity and inclusivity, the OCM has created the program Music for Everyone which enables collaborations with numerous new immigrant communities and Montreal organizations in making OCM’s performances accessible to all. The OCM proudly acknowledges BMO Financial Group as its 2021-22 Season Presenter.
