Some legacies are passed down, and others must be claimed.
In the 2025/26 season, Edmonton Opera explores what it means to inherit, build, and redefine a legacy through a bold lineup of performances and special events. This season celebrates the voices that shaped the art form, the artists carrying it forward, and the ongoing evolution of opera as the living art form that continues to inspire new generations.
“Our 2026/26 season is really about what we inherit, what we keep, and what we redefine,” says Edmonton Opera’s Artistic Director, Joel Ivany. “From celebrating opera’s greatest moments to championing new voices and groundbreaking works, we invite audiences to be part of this living legacy that is Edmonton Opera, 62 years in the community.”
The season opens with Bravi! Opera’s Greatest Hits, a grand celebration of opera’s most powerful and timeless music, in partnership with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Taking place at the Winspear Centre on October 9 and 11, this theatrical concert, staged by our own Artistic Director Joel Ivany showcases iconic work from Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, and Bizet, highlighting the legacy of opera’s greatest moments with stunning soloists and the Edmonton Opera Chorus.
November brings the Rumbold Vocal Prize, a national competition that brings together Canada’s brightest emerging voices. The annual Grand Finale is held at the Horowitz Theatre on November 21. This event shines a spotlight on the future of opera through the visionary support of the Rumbold family. More than just a competition, it proves that legacies in opera aren’t always inherited – sometimes, they must be earned.
In February, audiences will witness the world premiere of Indians on Vacation, a poignant and comedic new opera based on Thomas King’s novel of the same name. Composed by Ian Cusson with a libretto by Albertan Royce Vavrek, this production explores memory, identity, and the stories we reclaim. Co-produced with Against the Grain Theatre, and supported by the Yukon Arts Centre, University of Toronto Opera, and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the production runs on February 5, 6 and 7, 2026 at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
The season concludes with the third chapter of Wagner’s legendary Ring Cycle, Siegfried. Fate is forged in fire, we learn by following Siegfried as he discovers his true heritage, forges a mighty sword, and awakens the sleeping Valkyrie, Brünnhilde. This epic tale of heroism and fate will be performed at Maclab Theatre at Citadel on May 25, 27, 29 and 31, 2026.
Beyond the mainstage productions, Edmonton Opera’s signature events offer many experiences that blend music with community and tradition. Opera al Fresco, set in the beautiful landscapes of the University of Alberta Botanic Gardens, offering a magical pairing of music and nature, returns on August 27. Messiah at the Market will once again fill the EPIC Market with soaring choruses of Handel’s Messiah on December 4, 5 and 7, creating a warm, immersive holiday experience. The Dianne Kipnes Valentine’s Gala, Edmonton Opera’s most elegant evening, will take place on February 12 at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald. Renamed in honour of opera’s beloved supporter, this gala is a night of exceptional performances and philanthropy in action, in support of the arts.
“Our signature events bring opera beyond the stage and into the community”, says Edmonton Opera’s Executive Director Robin Whiffen. “Whether it’s a summer night filled with music in the garden, a festive sing-along in a busy Whyte Ave restaurant, or a black-tie fundraising gala at the Fairmont, these events allow us to honour the past while shaping the future of the opera. They are a vital part of our legacy, bridging tradition while creating memories for new audiences.”
