Montreal, May 18 – A women’s collective from the Quebec artistic and business communities are combining their talents to present the premiere of Albertine en cinq temps – L’opéra from Aug. 19 to 23. The performance will be presented online from the Théâtre du Rideau Vert in Montreal. This event is a unique showcase, highlighting excerpts from Michel Tremblay’s play, adapted as an opera by Productions du 10 avril and set to music by the internationally renowned author, composer, musician and singer Catherine Major. Presented by The Scotiabank Women Initiative, this project is a springboard for the launch of a full production in 2022-2023.

Albertine en cinq temps, in its original theatrical version, is a tribute to the progress achieved by women, over the past few decades, to find and make a place for themselves,” says Michel Tremblay. “It is an ode to the courage of women who, despite sometimes dark moments, give us hope in life. As a great opera lover, I will be delighted to hear them sing.”

“The entire team is proud to give life to this play by Michel Tremblay who, throughout his career as a playwright, has succeeded in expressing all the human and societal complexity of several generations of Quebec women,”  says Nathalie Deschamps, artistic director of Productions du 10 avril and instigator of the project. “In this period of global crisis, I felt an urgent need to give women a voice; Albertine en cinq temps appeared to be the best way to create a new popular opera. These performances present a foretaste of the production to be launched next year, once the pandemic is a thing of the past.”

At a press conference on Tuesday Major described the musical style of the piece as between chanson and opera. The composer praised Tremblay’s vernacular French as inherently musical. Plans for the premiere performances call for a piano accompaniment.

The performance, lasting about one hour, will be presented as a live webcast on Aug. 19, then on a deferred basis from Aug. 20 to Aug. 23 inclusively.

Women with remarkable voices at centre stage

The opera, assembling several generations of women in a unique and remarkable cast, puts the spotlight on six great voices: Chantal Lambert, Monique Pagé, Chantal Dionne, Michèle Losier and Catherine St-Arnaud in the five stages of Albertine’s life, and Marianne Lambert in the role of Madeleine, Albertine’s sister.

Tickets are available at the lepointdevente.com platform at a cost of $20.
